Bergisches Land is a rural region within the state of North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany. It’s low mountains are shaped by woods and meadows. Fresh water from creeks and rivers is stored by dams into over 20 artificial lakes.
Unlike what one might expect this region is not named after its hilly topography (’Berg‘ meaning Mountain), but after its former rulers, the Counts (and later Dukes) of Berg.
During the early industrialisation the Wupper Valley was trading and industrial driver of the Prussian state and laid the foundation for the neighbored coal-mining area along the Ruhr River. Friedrich-Engels was born here to a textile mill owner.
